AVIX’s Efforts in Drone Type Certification and International Market Expansion
On July 14, 2021, Mr. Chen Yucheng, an instructor from the Taiwan Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) responsible for UAV type certification, represented Taiwan at an APEC Transportation Working Group (TPTWG) seminar. During the "Aviation Elite Group" online seminar, he presented on "How Certification Supports UAV Industry Innovation," using AVIX's unmanned helicopter—Taiwan’s first to pass type certification for UAVs exceeding 25 kg, featuring a hydrogen fuel cell developed in collaboration with ITRI—as a case study.Mr. Chen shared insights on Taiwan’s UAV type certification framework and inspection procedures with an international audience, focusing on how AVIX’s shift from lithium batteries to hydrogen fuel cells aligned with certification requirements. This transition involved not only meeting specific technical standards but also ensuring compliance with emergency protocols, monitoring parameters, and logic definitions, all while maintaining safety margins for high-altitude missions. With 28 years of experience in aviation management, Mr. Chen emphasized that creating a certification system aligned with international standards is not a hindrance to technological innovation, but rather a facilitator that enables technology to "fly farther and freer" within safety limits. However, he acknowledged that the process is not instantaneous and requires task-specific testing across different stages. Through systematic crisis management and regulatory alignment, the industry’s technical capabilities and regulations can be best integrated. He affirmed that AVIX's commitment to type certification is not only essential for entering international markets but also serves as a prime example of "technology, mission, and verification" in action. "Play the whole game," he concluded. "Follow the rules and play for real" is perhaps the key to safer, higher, and more visionary flight—because every small step in UAV certification is a giant leap toward boundary-breaking and continuous innovation.
